Exclusion Screening for Pharmacies

Pharmacists, technicians, delivery drivers and vendors: how independent and specialty pharmacies can check their staff against the OIG, SAM and state Medicaid lists every month.

Who to check

  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, including part-time and floating staff.
  • Delivery drivers and front-store staff who handle prescriptions.
  • Billing, compliance and inventory staff.
  • Contracted relief pharmacists and outside billing services.

Why it matters for a pharmacy

Pharmacies bill Medicare Part D plans and Medicaid for every prescription they fill, so anyone excluded who touches dispensing or billing is a risk to every claim.

What to check and how often

Check every person against the OIG exclusion list (LEIE) and SAM.gov before they start, and again every month: OIG updates its list monthly and says monthly screening best minimizes the risk. Add your state's Medicaid list where it keeps one (state lists).

Keep a dated record of every check and of how each potential match was resolved. Plans do this for you, with a monthly PDF report.

Questions

Do we need to check delivery drivers?

If they furnish items paid for by a federal health care program, the safest course is to check them like any other employee. Checking a full roster takes seconds.

Is the state board of pharmacy list the same as the Medicaid exclusion list?

No. A licence action and a Medicaid exclusion are separate lists; ExclusionHQ checks the exclusion and termination lists, not licence status.
