Exclusion Screening for DME Suppliers
Durable medical equipment suppliers: how to screen delivery technicians, respiratory therapists, sales reps and billing staff against the federal and state exclusion lists.
Add dates of birth: the LEIE lists one for almost everyone, and it is what tells two people with the same name apart.
Who to check
- Delivery and setup technicians, and respiratory therapists.
- Sales and intake staff, and anyone who takes physician orders.
- Billing, coding and documentation staff.
- Owners, managing employees and contracted delivery or billing companies.
Why it matters for a DME supplier
DME companies appear on the OIG list as businesses and through their owners, and suppliers bill Medicare and Medicaid for every item, so checking both your people and your business partners matters.
What to check and how often
Check every person against the OIG exclusion list (LEIE) and SAM.gov before they start, and again every month: OIG updates its list monthly and says monthly screening best minimizes the risk. Add your state's Medicaid list where it keeps one (state lists).
Keep a dated record of every check and of how each potential match was resolved. Plans do this for you, with a monthly PDF report.

Questions
Should we check the companies we buy from?
The free check and plans screen individuals today; screening companies is planned. Meanwhile, search OIG's site for key vendors by business name.
How often should a DME supplier check?
OIG recommends checking before hiring and periodically after, and says monthly best minimizes the risk because the list updates monthly.
